HELLO Broom People

Hello and welcome my fellow broom people! I can only assume that you are fellow sort-of-luddites and won’t be put off by a mid-2000s style, off the cuff Broom Musings blog. A Friday newletter sort of vibe but not updated so often.

Check out this funny piece of sorghum! Before I even think about making a broom, I need to process one of the 50 lbs boxes of soghum that I have shipped to my studio. This means spending a day or two sifting the loose hurl from the “inside” pieces (like you see above) that make up the structure of the broom. Then all of the insides are graded by length and have the one tough fiber removed. Yes, this is a nutty step but it makes the brooms that much more flexible and, I think, gives a superior sweep. Sometimes you get an inside piece that looks like dried ramen and it’s charming. I usually snap a pic.
